Trap Ahead: Beware the $69 “Tune-Up”

You’ve seen the ads (or if you haven’t, you will):

“$69 Furnace Tune-Up!”

And you’ve probably, like any reasonable person, asked yourself: Can it really cost that little to keep my heating system safe?

Short answer? No.

Long answer? If you’re in Waukesha, Brookfield, Oconomowoc or West Bend, here’s what you really need to know about heating maintenance — and what’s actually worth paying for.

The $69 Trap

Most companies don’t make money on a $69 visit — unless they’re selling you something else. That “deal” often consists of the following parts or similar:

  1. A rushed appointment (15–30 minutes max)
  2. No real cleaning
  3. Followed by pressure to replace expensive parts

We see it every (and I do mean every) year: cheap tune-ups followed by expensive repairs that may not have been necessary. In fact, they probably weren’t.

Overdoing It Isn’t Better

At the other end, you’ve got full-out teardowns and deep-cleans that take hours and cost $400+. That’s…not maintenance. Put honestly, it’s just overkill.

“There’s a time to take a furnace apart. That time is not during a routine visit.”

–Eric Smith, Austin CEO

We’ve had more than enough homeowners call us after a “deep clean” introduced new issues to realize it’s time this PSA were broadcast to the public. Oh, and of course, ahead we’ll tell ya what you can actually, you know, do about it.

What Smart Maintenance Actually Looks Like

I’ll keep it simple, just like a tune-up should be. Here’s Austin’s “just right” approach:

  • Replace filter
  • Clean flame sensor, burners, ignition system
  • Test blower motor, safety switches, and heat exchanger
  • Run full system cycle to verify safe and efficient operation

Of course, if you’re hearing this for the first time in personthen yeah, you might be getting a game run on you. No layman can sort that much new information fast enough to make a proper purchase.

Suffice it to say this isn’t actually a lot. It’s not a little, either, but it’s also nothing you should break the bank for. Not even close.

What Legit Maintenance Should Cost You

So like I said, it’s not about doing more. Just…doing the right work. Simple, right?

But let’s get a little nitty-grittier. In this market, anything under $100 is risky, whereas anything over $350 is likely overdone.

Our sweet spot? $189–$225.

For Wisconsin: Why It Matters

Wisconsin winters are no joke, but you knew that. Your furnace matters in a tangible, real, day-to-day-relevant kind of way. And well…when your system is working overtime from December through March every year, real maintenance isn’t exactly optional anymore. Maybe for the rest of the country, or at least the southern states, but dude. Not for us.

Real tune-ups = fewer emergency calls, lower bills, more comfort.
