Winter Plumbing, Heating & Electrical Issues: What’s Normal vs. When to Call

Winter in Wisconsin does weird things to your house.

Some mornings your furnace makes a strange sound when it kicks on. Pipes start knocking. You catch a whiff of something odd when the heat runs. Or your lights flicker slightly when the dryer starts.

Most homeowners have the same thought: “Is that normal? Or do I need to call someone?

Let’s break down the most common winter plumbing, heating, and electrical issues — what’s just a seasonal quirk, and what’s a red flag worth calling Austin Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electric about.

Heating System: Winter Workhorse or Warning Sign?

1. Furnace Is Making Banging or Clicking Noises

May Be Normal If: It’s a light click as it powers on/off.
Call Us If: You hear loud banging, popping, or metal-on-metal sounds. These could point to delayed ignition, a loose part, or heat exchanger damage.

2. It Smells Dusty When the Heat Kicks On

May Be Normal If: It’s the first few times you’ve run it this season.
Call Us If: The smell doesn’t go away after a few days, or if it smells like burning plastic, metal, or electrical.

3. Your Furnace Keeps Turning On and Off (Short Cycling)

Never Normal. This could be a clogged filter, thermostat problem, or something more serious. It reduces comfort and shortens your system’s life. We should take a look.

Plumbing: Frozen Pipes, Phantom Drips & Mid-Winter Woes

1. Pipes Are Knocking or Banging

May Be Normal If: It’s a light knock when shutting off water quickly (known as water hammer).
Call Us If: It’s loud, frequent, or happening while water is running. Could mean unsecured pipes or high pressure.

2. Outlets Feel Warm or Smell Funny

Never Normal. Call immediately. Warm outlets or strange smells (especially a fishy or burning odor) mean trouble. Turn off the breaker and call us.

3. Breakers Are Tripping More Than Usual

Call Us. This often means a wiring problem or overloaded circuit. Winter load on your panel is higher with heaters, humidifiers, etc.

Electrical: Flickers, Trips & Power Oddities

1. Lights Flicker When Large Appliances Turn On

May Be Normal If: It’s a single flicker when something like the dryer or furnace kicks on.
Call Us If: It happens frequently, is severe, or happens across multiple rooms. Could be a load issue, failing panel, or worse.

2. Outlets Feel Warm or Smell Funny

Never Normal. Call immediately. Warm outlets or strange smells (especially a fishy or burning odor) mean trouble. Turn off the breaker and call us.

3. Breakers Are Tripping More Than Usual

Call Us. This often means a wiring problem or overloaded circuit. Winter load on your panel is higher with heaters, humidifiers, etc.

Why It Matters to Catch This Stuff Early

When a customer calls us and says, “I didn’t want to bother you, but this has been happening for a while,” we get it.

Nobody wants to overreact. But a quick call can:

  • Prevent major water damage
  • Avoid mid-winter breakdowns
  • Extend your system’s life
  • Save you money on bigger repairs later

And sometimes, we’ll just tell you: “Yep, that’s normal.”

Bottom Line: Don’t Guess. Just Call Austin.

If something feels off, it probably is. And even if it isn’t, we’ll give you peace of mind either way.
