Boiler & Hydronic Heating Problems We Repair
With hydronic heat, where you notice the problem and where the problem actually is can be two different places.
That is why we look at the heating system as a system, not just the boiler cabinet.
Sometimes the boiler simply will not start. Other times it fires, locks out, throws an error code or works intermittently.
The problem may be ignition, a control, low water pressure, a safety condition or something elsewhere in the system preventing normal operation.
We test before we start replacing parts.
If most of the house is warm but one area is not, the boiler itself may be perfectly capable of making heat.
The problem may be a thermostat, zone valve, circulator, control, trapped air or a problem with the piping serving that part of the house.
Cold floors do not automatically mean you need a new boiler.
Radiant and in-floor systems depend on the boiler, pumps, controls, valves and individual heating loops all working together.
We routinely troubleshoot hydronic floor-heating systems and the equipment connected to them.
Water around a boiler deserves attention, but the boiler itself is not always what is leaking.
Expansion tanks, relief valves, fill valves, backflow preventers, pumps, fittings, zone valves and hydronic piping can all be involved.
We find the source before deciding what needs to be repaired.
Hydronic systems should not sound like somebody is throwing pipes around inside the walls.
Air, poor pressure, circulation problems, failed air elimination, buildup or another system condition can cause banging, gurgling and other noises.
The answer is not always simply bleeding a radiator and hoping it goes away.
A boiler can be running while a radiator or section of baseboard stays cold.
That often sends the diagnosis toward circulation, zoning, trapped air, controls or piping rather than the boiler burner itself.
We service the equipment that makes the heat and the hydronic system responsible for delivering it.
Making heat and moving that heat through the house are two different jobs.
A weak or failed circulator, control problem, zone issue, system-pressure problem or another hydronic condition can leave the boiler running while the house falls behind.
That is why boiler troubleshooting has to go beyond checking whether the burner is on.
Some boilers also heat domestic water through an indirect tank or are part of a combination boiler system.
When the hot water stops working, the problem can involve the boiler, controls, priority settings, pumps or the domestic-water side of the system.
We can diagnose the complete setup instead of treating the heating and hot-water systems as unrelated equipment.
Who Should You Call for Boiler or Hydronic Heating Repair?
Someone who works on these systems regularly.
Hydronic heating combines water, piping, combustion, pumps, valves, electrical controls, thermostats and zoning. Knowing furnaces does not automatically make someone good at boilers.
Boiler and hydronic work is not an occasional call for us. Our own service history includes hundreds of boiler problem and maintenance visits, along with radiant heat, in-floor systems, pumps, zones, controls and hydronic piping.
A boiler’s job is to create heat.
The rest of the system still has to move that heat through the house.
That may involve circulators, zone valves, controls, thermostats, manifolds, piping, radiators, baseboards or radiant-floor loops.
So if the boiler is running and the bedroom is still cold, we do not stop troubleshooting at the boiler.
We follow the system until we understand why the heat is not getting where it belongs.
Boiler systems live at the intersection of two trades.
There is combustion, venting, electrical and controls on the heating side. There is also water, pumps, valves and piping throughout the hydronic system.
Austin has both plumbing and heating depth under one roof.
That becomes especially useful when the repair moves beyond an internal boiler component and into the piping or water side of the system.
Boilers reward experience.
An intermittent control problem, poor circulation, trapped air or a zoning issue can look completely different from one house to the next.
Our heating technicians train every week through Austin U, and boiler work is handled by people with the experience to understand what the readings and system behavior are actually telling them.
The diagnostic equipment matters.
Knowing what the result means matters more.
A lot of boiler systems in Southeastern Wisconsin have been heating homes for a long time.
We are comfortable with that.
Old cast-iron boilers, older controls, radiator systems and decades-old hydronic piping are not automatically replacement jobs.
If the equipment is safe, serviceable and the repair makes economic sense, we repair older boilers.
Modern high-efficiency boilers are a different animal.
They can involve sophisticated controls, combustion setup, condensate systems, sensors, variable-speed pumps and more complicated piping arrangements.
We work on conventional boilers and modern high-efficiency systems.
The approach changes with the equipment.
The standard does not.
What Does Boiler Repair Cost in Southeastern Wisconsin?
Boiler repair pricing has a wider spread than furnace repair because the problem can be inside the boiler or somewhere in the hydronic system connected to it.
Our completed boiler calls show that clearly.
Across hundreds of qualifying completed Austin boiler-problem visits:
About 1 in 4 finished at $170 or less.
Half finished at about $375 or less.
About 3 in 4 finished at about $790 or less.
About 1 in 12 finished above $1,500.
These are completed service visits, not advertised starting prices. They include calls where the answer was diagnosis or a smaller correction and calls where boiler or hydronic repair was completed.
Complete boiler replacement stays separate.
A smaller call might involve diagnosis, a control issue or a straightforward correction.
Larger boiler and hydronic repairs can involve circulator pumps, zone valves, expansion tanks, fill and pressure components, ignition controls, extensive purging, multiple failed components or piping work elsewhere in the heating system.
That is why two homeowners can both call about “no heat” and have very different repairs.
Yes.
We checked our completed boiler-service history against current published pricing for comparable boiler work in Southeastern Wisconsin. The historical Austin numbers fall within normal market pricing for comparable work.
The important part is comparing the same work. A small valve or control repair is not the same job as replacing multiple pumps, repiping part of a hydronic system or correcting several failures at once.
Our standard heating dispatch fee is $99.
If you move forward with the repair, we waive it. The fee is also waived for current Club Austin members.
Then our pricing follows the same order it always should:
Problem → Diagnosis → Choice → Price
We determine what is actually wrong, explain the reasonable way forward and give you the price before authorized repair work begins.
You may not know the exact price before we see the system, but you should be able to trust how we get there.
Our tradespeople are paid to solve the problem. We diagnose first, explain the reasonable choices and give you the price before authorized work begins.

We Start With Repair.
If Replacement Deserves a Look, We’ll Tell You.
When you call us because your boiler or hydronic heating system is not working, our first job is to figure out what failed and whether it can be reasonably repaired.
We do not walk into an old-boiler call assuming you need a new boiler.
If the problem can be repaired and putting the money into the system still makes sense, that is where we start.
If the condition of the boiler, repeated failures, unavailable parts or the size of the repair reaches a point where replacement deserves a fair comparison, we will tell you and explain why.
Boiler Repair Makes Sense When…
- The problem is isolated and repairable.
- The boiler itself is still structurally sound.
- Replacement parts are available.
- The rest of the hydronic system is in reasonable condition.
- You have not been stacking one major repair on top of another.
- The repair gives you a reasonable path to continued service.
An old boiler can still be a good boiler. If repairing it makes sense, we’ll repair it.
We’ll Tell You When Replacement Is Worth Considering.
- The boiler is leaking internally or the heat exchanger has failed.
- Important repair parts are obsolete or unavailable.
- Several expensive components are failing at the same time.
- You have been dealing with repeated breakdowns.
- The system has larger piping, control or compatibility problems.
- The repair investment is getting difficult to justify against the condition of the equipment.
If we think you should consider replacement, we’ll show you why.
You do not need to make a repair-versus-replacement decision before we get there.
We start with the problem in front of us.
Our technicians are there to solve it, and their pay does not increase because your repair gets larger or because you decide to replace the boiler.
Sometimes the right answer is repairing a 30-year-old boiler.
Sometimes the condition of the system tells us it is time to stop putting money into it.
Our job is to know the difference and give you enough information to make a good decision.

How We Diagnose a Boiler & Hydronic Heating System
No heat everywhere?
One cold bedroom?
Cold basement floor?
Radiator not warming?
A leaking boiler?
Where the problem shows up gives us the first clue about where to start.
We check boiler operation, controls, pressure, combustion and the conditions that affect whether it can safely and reliably produce heat.
If the boiler itself is the problem, we stay there.
If it is doing its job, we keep moving.
That may mean checking pumps, circulators, zone valves, thermostats, controls, system pressure, piping, radiators, baseboards or radiant loops.
The boiler running is not the same thing as the heating system working.
Once we understand what failed, we explain it in plain language.
Sometimes there is one obvious repair.
Other times there is a smaller repair and a broader correction worth comparing.
You will understand what each choice solves.
Once the problem has been diagnosed, we give you the repair price before you authorize the work.
You know what we are recommending and what it costs before anything moves forward.
A boiler repair is not finished because one component turns back on.
We cycle the equipment and verify the part of the hydronic system we repaired is operating the way it should.
The outcome we care about is heat getting where it belongs.

Boiler & Hydronic Heating Questions Homeowners Ask
We do.
Boilers and hydronic heating systems are a major part of what Austin’s heating team works on throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.
We service conventional and high-efficiency boilers along with the complete systems connected to them: pumps and circulators, zone valves, thermostats, controls, hydronic piping, radiators, hot-water baseboards, radiant heat and in-floor heating.
That whole-system capability is a big reason homeowners call Austin when they have hydronic heat.
A boiler technician has to understand more than how to make the boiler fire. Somebody also has to understand how the heat moves through the house and be able to determine whether the problem is in the boiler, circulation, controls, zoning or piping.
That is the work we do every day.
Call Austin.
A hydronic heating system crosses both trades.
The boiler involves combustion, venting, electrical controls and heating-system diagnosis. The rest of the system involves water, pumps, valves, pressure, circulation and piping.
Austin has experienced heating technicians and plumbing expertise under the same roof.
So you do not have to decide whether the problem “belongs” to an HVAC company or a plumber before making the call.
If it is part of the boiler or hydronic heating system, start with us.
Yes.
We service boiler-based radiant and in-floor heating systems, including problems involving the boiler, circulation pumps, zones, controls and hydronic loops.
If your floor is cold while the boiler appears to be running, we can troubleshoot why the heat is not reaching that zone.
Yes.
Age alone is not a reason to replace a boiler.
We routinely work on older boiler systems. If the equipment is safe, serviceable, parts are available and the repair makes economic sense, we are comfortable repairing it.
Yes, when it is part of the hydronic heating system.
A cold radiator or baseboard may be caused by trapped air, poor circulation, a zone problem, a valve, system pressure or another hydronic condition.
We diagnose why hot water is not reaching that part of the system rather than assuming the radiator itself is bad.
Yes.
We service conventional boilers as well as modern high-efficiency and condensing equipment.
Modern boilers can have more sophisticated combustion, controls, sensors, pumps and condensate systems, so the troubleshooting process is different from an older cast-iron boiler.
Our technicians work on both.
Yes.
That is exactly the kind of problem a hydronic-heating technician should handle.
If the boiler is producing heat, the problem may be farther downstream in a circulator, zone valve, control, thermostat, piping or another part of the heating system.
You do not need to determine which component failed before booking the call.
