Why Sussex Homeowners Have Called Austin Since 1939

Austin Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electric has roots in Sussex going back to the very beginning — this company grew from a small Sussex farm started by Austin Smith in 1939. We’re now in our third generation of family ownership, and Sussex homeowners have been calling Austin across multiple generations because they know what they’re going to get every time.

At Austin, there are no salespeople. Every person who comes to your home is a tradesperson, trained in-house. Our techs are non-commissioned — they get paid the same for a $150 repair as they do for a $3,000 replacement. Sussex homeowners aren’t getting pitched. They’re getting a straight answer and solid work. That’s been true since the beginning and nothing about that has changed.

What Sussex homeowners say about us: friendly and considerate techs who show up on time, explain everything clearly, and leave the home the way they found it. Fast service and honest answers. Every one of our 3,500+ five-star reviews was earned — never bought, never traded, never manufactured. Real neighbors sharing real experiences. That’s the standard.

Real Work Completed in Sussex

Douglas K. suspected groundwater was leaking into his aging cast iron underground drain system. We broke out the concrete, removed the old cast iron drain pipes and lift crock, and replaced everything with new PVC drains, a new crock, pump, and lid. We also installed a new laundry sink and patched the concrete before wrapping up.
Brennan G. called after his water softener stopped working and had gone without treated water for quite some time. We replaced the old softener and iron filter with new Capital units and also swapped out the aging water heater for a new 50-gallon model with an expansion tank. Everything was tested and confirmed working properly before we left.
Jon and Jean H. had been dealing with a locked-up blower motor and a loud inducer on their existing furnace, making repair costs no longer worth it. We replaced the furnace with a new 96% efficiency unit and also replaced the humidifier and the flue pipe with new PVC. Everything was installed and confirmed working before we left.
Bill L. called after his mini split system stopped cooling properly. When we inspected it we found the system had lost most of its refrigerant over the winter, with only 2 pounds remaining out of the 7 it should have. We pressure tested the system, tightened loose fittings where we found oil residue from refrigerant leaks, pulled a vacuum, and recharged the system to the correct weight. All indoor heads were tested and confirmed cooling properly before we left.
Chris and Cassie C. needed their aging electrical panel replaced and wanted to be ready for electric vehicle charging. We installed a new 200-amp meter pedestal, a new 200-amp main panel in the garage, and a 100-amp sub panel in the basement to replace the old one. We also hard-wired their Level 2 EV charger on a dedicated 60-amp circuit and handled the necessary permit and We Energies paperwork for the service upgrade.
Sarah L. needed a full water treatment upgrade along with a new water heater. We installed a new 48,000 grain water softener, iron filter, and 50-gallon gas water heater with expansion tank, and ran new drain lines for the water conditioning equipment. Everything was tested and confirmed working properly before we left.

Common Questions Sussex Homeowners Ask Austin

Will Austin try to sell me work I don’t need?
No — and there’s history here: Austin started on a small Sussex farm in 1939. The company employs only tradespeople, never salespeople, and every tech is non-commissioned, earning the same on a repair or a replacement. You’ll get honest options and decide for yourself, because empowering the client is one of Austin’s core values. Selling you more simply doesn’t benefit anyone here.
Do Sussex homeowners vouch for Austin?
Yes. Austin’s 3,500+ five-star reviews across Southeast Wisconsin were earned the honest way — never bought, traded, or manufactured. Sussex homeowners describe techs who show up on time, explain everything clearly, and leave the home the way they found it. Real neighbors, real experiences, at a volume that speaks for itself.
Who shows up when I call Austin?
A trained Austin tradesperson — in-house, “the Austin Way,” never a sub or a salesperson. The person who arrives diagnoses the real issue, walks you through your options plainly, minds their manners, and does the work to Austin’s craftsmanship standards.
Who owns Austin, and can I trust them?
Eric Smith — Owner, President, third-generation master tradesman — owns Austin, which his grandfather Austin Smith founded right here in Sussex in 1939. The founder’s name carries on through Eric’s young son Austin, the fourth generation and the boy in Austin’s TV commercials. The company still runs on the founder’s words, “Be Good,” and it isn’t for sale at any price — investors ask, and the answer is always no.
What happens if something goes wrong?
Austin’s promise is one line and it’s a core value: if our work breaks, we’ll fix it for free. If the workmanship fails, Austin makes it right at no charge. And because Austin’s roots are right here and it isn’t going anywhere, there’s always a real, accountable company to call.
Can Austin actually handle my problem?
Almost certainly. Austin handles plumbing, water heaters, heating, cooling, electrical, and more — all in-house and to code — and has done this kind of work since its Sussex beginnings in 1939. When an issue crosses systems, one experienced company takes care of all of it.
