Water Heater Repair in Southeastern Wisconsin

Need Water Heater Repair? Start Here.

No hot water, leaking components, strange noises and poor hot-water performance can come from failed parts, buildup, overdue service or a water heater that has actually reached the end of its life.

You do not have to figure out which one before you call.

Austin starts by finding out what is actually happening. We fix what is broken, service what needs service and, when replacement truly deserves consideration, explain why.

  • Same-day water-heater appointments are available, and most of the time we’re at the home within about two hours of the call.

  • Austin technicians follow a documented water-heater diagnostic and servicing process instead of changing parts based on symptoms alone.

  • Our fleet carries the common gas and electric water-heater repair parts we use every day, allowing us to complete most repairs on the same trip.

  • You’ll know what we found, your reasonable choices and the price before authorized work begins.

Water Heater Problems We Diagnose, Repair & Service

A water heater can fail in a lot of different ways.

The symptom tells us where to start.

It does not always tell us what needs to be repaired.

That distinction matters because a cold shower can come from a failed component, a maintenance-related condition, a problem with the system feeding the water heater or a tank that has actually reached the end of its life.

We Diagnose Water Heaters. We Don’t Guess.

Austin technicians use a dedicated Water Heater Deep Dive & Servicing process to work through a water-heater problem methodically.

The process is designed to do two things at the same time:

Address the service and maintenance conditions that can interfere with operation, and collect the critical information from the water heater and the home that helps us find the root cause of the problem.

We begin with the equipment itself: type, model, serial number, age, condition, maintenance history, symptoms, fault codes and what the homeowner has been experiencing.

From there, the diagnostic path changes based on the type of water heater and what we find.

Depending on the equipment and symptoms, that can mean checking things such as venting, gas supply, electrical supply, ignition components, controls, water pressure, temperature, water quality, safety devices, condensate, heating elements, thermostats and other operating components.

Our technicians also carry the diagnostic instruments required to properly test these systems and are trained to use them.

A meter reading, pressure measurement or component test tells us considerably more than replacing a part and hoping the problem goes away.

We do not perform every test on every water heater simply because it appears on a checklist. The process guides the technician through the checks that make sense for that equipment and that problem.

When the work is complete, the heater is tested again before we leave.

The goal is simple:

Find out why the water heater is not working before deciding what needs to be done about it.

No Hot Water

On a gas water heater, no hot water can come from a pilot, ignition, thermopile, gas-control or other operating problem.

On an electric heater, an element, thermostat, electrical connection or control may be the issue.

Sometimes the problem is a failed component.

Sometimes servicing restores proper operation.

Sometimes the water heater is responding to a problem somewhere else in the system.

We find out what stopped the heater from working before recommending what to do about it.

Pilot Light or Ignition Problems

A pilot that will not light or will not stay lit can have several causes.

Sometimes the problem is straightforward.

Other times the pilot outage is the symptom of a gas-control, sensor, venting, combustion or maintenance-related problem.

Relighting it once does not tell us why it went out.

If the problem keeps happening, we want to know why.

Water Heater Leaks

Where the water is coming from changes everything.

A leaking tank normally means replacement.

A leaking relief valve, fitting, connection or piece of piping may be repairable.

We regularly arrive at homes where there is water around the heater and the homeowner assumes the tank is finished, only to find the tank itself is still sound.

We check before making that call.

Not Enough Hot Water

Maybe the shower suddenly turns lukewarm.

Maybe the water never gets as hot as it used to.

Maybe the heater works, but does not recover the way it should.

Heating elements, controls, temperature settings, sediment and the actual hot-water demand in the home can all affect performance.

The right work depends on why the performance changed.

Water Is Too Hot or the Temperature Keeps Changing

A water heater that is suddenly producing unusually hot water or inconsistent temperatures deserves attention.

Thermostats, controls, temperature settings and mixing components can all affect what reaches the faucet.

We test the system rather than assuming every temperature problem has the same cure.

Power-Vent Water Heater Problems

Power-vent water heaters add more components to the system.

Blowers, pressure switches, controls, ignition components, sensors, condensate and venting conditions can all affect operation.

That means proper troubleshooting may involve more than looking at the error code on the control.

Depending on the failure, our diagnostic process can include checking the venting and condensate system, verifying the draft motor and pressure switch operation, taking pressure or vacuum readings, checking gas supply and evaluating the controls involved in the ignition sequence.

An intermittent lockout can take more diagnostic work than a heater that simply fails every time it tries to run.

That is one reason diagnosis comes before the repair price.

Electric Water Heater Problems

Electric water heaters can stop heating completely or lose part of their heating capacity when an element, thermostat, wiring connection or control fails.

Our technicians can use electrical testing equipment to test components rather than replacing parts based on symptoms alone.

And because Austin has electrical capability inside the same company, we can keep going if the problem turns out to be outside the water heater itself.

Rumbling, Popping or Other New Noises

A new rumble, pop or other unusual sound does not automatically mean the heater is finished.

Sediment and mineral buildup can collect inside a tank and affect how the water heater operates.

Sometimes servicing the heater is the appropriate corrective work.

Other noises can point toward a component beginning to fail or a larger problem with an aging water heater.

We determine what is actually creating the noise before deciding whether the answer is maintenance, repair or something more.

Hot Water Smells Bad or Looks Different

If a smell or discoloration appears only on the hot-water side, the water heater may be part of the problem.

Anode rods, sediment and water conditions can all play a role.

If the same issue is happening on both hot and cold water, Austin can look beyond the heater too.

We have plumbing, well and water-treatment capability inside the same company.

Sometimes Maintenance Is the Repair

Not every water-heater problem is caused by a broken component.

Sediment, mineral scale, dirty operating components and other service-related conditions can affect noise, ignition, recovery and how much usable hot water the system delivers.

When that is what is causing the problem, replacing a part does not solve the right problem.

The heater needs to be serviced.

That is one reason our Water Heater Deep Dive combines servicing with diagnosis instead of treating the two as completely unrelated jobs.

In some cases, cleaning and servicing the appropriate components restores normal operation without a major component replacement.

Maintenance cannot repair a failed tank or bring every failed component back to life.

But when service is what the water heater needs, we are perfectly comfortable telling you that.

No Hot Water? Let’s Find Out Why.

You do not need to know whether you need a gas valve, heating element, relief valve, maintenance or a whole new water heater before you call.

You tell us what the water heater is doing.

We’ll figure out why.

What Does Water Heater Repair Cost?

Water-heater repairs can be small or fairly involved.

Rather than give you one giant range that does not tell you much, we looked at completed repair work from Austin’s own service history.

What Completed Water Heater Repairs Have Cost

Looking at completed tank-style water-heater repairs from 2025 through August 2026:

About 1 in 3 were $150 or less.

More than half were under $400.

About 3 in 4 were $500 or less.

More than 9 in 10 were $750 or less.

These are completed repair totals. Full replacements, maintenance-only visits and diagnosis-only visits are not mixed into those repair figures. They provide a useful historical expectation for what completed Austin water-heater repairs have cost. They are not a quote for a water heater we have not diagnosed yet.

Why Can One Water Heater Repair Cost More Than Another?

Sometimes we find one failed part and that is the whole repair.

Other calls involve more.

A relief valve or straightforward electrical repair is different from a more expensive gas control.

One failed component is different from several things needing attention.

A heater that fails every time it runs can also be easier to pin down than a power-vent unit that locks out once every few days.

Less-common or manufacturer-specific parts may have to be ordered specifically for that heater.

And sometimes what starts as a water-heater symptom turns out to involve water pressure, venting, gas, electrical or another system condition that also needs attention.

Whatever we find, we explain it and give you the price for the work before you decide to move forward.

What Does the $99 Dispatch Cover?

Our $99 dispatch includes the initial diagnostic work needed to get to the bottom of most water-heater problems.

If the problem requires diagnostic work beyond that, we explain what needs to be done and quote it before going further.

The dispatch fee is waived when you move forward with the work.

It is also waived for Club Austin members.

Upfront & Fair Water Heater Repair Pricing Since 1939

Austin’s process is:

Problem → Diagnosis → Choice → Price

We find out what is wrong before recommending what to do about it.

If there is more than one reasonable choice, we explain the choices.

Then you see the price before authorized work begins.

Our plumbers are paid to solve the problem, not based on how large the repair or replacement becomes.

We were given options, pricing & information all up front for any of our issues. I especially liked the no hurry or being pushed into an immediate decision on the spot – No pressure approach.

What Happens When You Call Austin for Water Heater Repair?

A water-heater problem can end in a few different places.

Sometimes servicing the heater is the repair.

Sometimes a component has failed and needs to be fixed.

And sometimes the condition of the water heater means putting more money into it no longer makes sense.

You do not have to figure out which one you have before calling Austin.

Nothing Major

Not every water-heater problem is caused by a failed component.

Sediment, scale, dirty operating components, improper settings and other service-related conditions can affect ignition, noise, recovery and hot-water performance.

That is why Austin’s Water Heater Deep Dive & Servicing process combines troubleshooting with corrective service where appropriate.

If servicing the heater restores proper operation and no additional repair is needed, that may be the end of the job.

We are not looking for a part to replace just because you called for a repair.

We are looking for what is actually causing the problem.

Needs A Fix

Water heaters have components that fail.

Gas controls.

Ignition components.

Heating elements.

Thermostats.

Relief valves.

Electrical components.

Piping and connections.

When testing shows that a failed component is causing the problem and repairing it makes sense, we show you what needs to be fixed and what it costs.

Austin carries the common gas and electric water-heater repair parts we use every day across our service fleet, which allows us to complete most repairs on the same trip.

The goal is not to make the repair bigger than it needs to be.

It is to fix what failed and get the water heater operating correctly again.

Needs Replacement

Sometimes the water heater has reached the end of the road.

There are situations where repair may technically be possible but replacement is still the better decision.

And there are others where the tank itself has failed and repair is no longer a real option.

We look at what actually failed, whether the tank is sound, the condition and age of the heater, its repair history, whether problems are becoming repetitive, how well it is meeting the home’s hot-water needs and what you are likely to gain by putting more money into it.

If replacement deserves consideration, we explain why.

If repair still makes sense, we tell you that too.

You are not pushed into making that decision before anyone has diagnosed the heater.

The Advice Doesn’t Change Based on the Size of the Job

Whichever direction the diagnosis takes us, the information is coming from a plumber who is paid the same whether your water heater needs a $150 repair or a $1,500 repair.

Their job is to figure out what the water heater needs, explain the reasonable choices and help you make the decision that makes sense for your home.

That is the point of diagnosing it first.

5-star google quote

They came out to look at our water heater where others would not, and found a simple problem. Others wanted to replace heater sight unseen. Will ALWAYS call them first from now on!

Why Homeowners Call Austin for Water Heater Repair

We Have a Real Water Heater Diagnostic Process

“Experienced” is easy for a contractor to say.

A diagnostic process is more concrete.

Austin technicians use a dedicated Water Heater Deep Dive & Servicing sheet that guides the evaluation and creates a record of what was found.

It captures the equipment information, age, condition, maintenance history, symptoms and fault information and guides the technician through the appropriate checks for that type of heater.

Depending on the system, that can include measured testing of gas, electrical, water-pressure, temperature, venting, ignition, safety and operating components.

After servicing or repair, the process also includes testing the heater again and documenting the findings and recommended next step.

That helps turn troubleshooting from a hunch into a repeatable process.

We Come Prepared to Repair It

Finding the problem is only half the battle.

Getting a plumber to the house quickly does not help much if the truck does not have what the repair commonly needs.

Austin carries the common gas and electric water-heater repair parts we use every day across our service fleet.

That allows us to complete most water-heater repairs on the same trip.

If the repair requires a less-common or manufacturer-specific component, we explain what needs to be ordered and what happens next.

And if the diagnosis leads to replacement, our warehouses, stocked replacement equipment and support team can keep the job moving without starting the process over with another company.

Our Plumbers Are Paid to Solve the Problem

The person diagnosing your water heater is not paid more because the repair gets larger or because you buy a new water heater.

That matters.

We want the recommendation to come from what the equipment needs and what makes sense for your home.

Not from which option creates the largest sale.

We Handle More Than the Tank

Sometimes the water heater is only part of what is happening.

Gas.

Electrical.

Plumbing.

Venting.

Water pressure.

Water quality.

Austin has plumbing, electrical, HVAC, well and water-treatment capability inside the same organization.

If the diagnosis leads outside the water heater, you are less likely to get bounced to another company and start the troubleshooting process over again.

We Train for Diagnosis

Our tradespeople train every week.

Austin U gives our team a place to work on diagnosis, equipment, installation practices, safety and the written standards we expect in customers’ homes.

The goal is not to train somebody to sell a water heater.

It is to make the person standing in front of the problem better at understanding it.

We Protect the Home While We Work

We communicate.

We show up prepared.

We wear shoe covers when we are working inside the home.

We protect the areas we are working through and around.

And when the work is finished, we clean up the work area and explain what was done.

Those things are simple.

They still matter.

Privately Owned. Built for the Long Term.

Austin has served Southeastern Wisconsin since 1939.

We remain 100% privately owned and are building the company for perpetuity.

If we repair your water heater today, our intention is to still be the company you can call the next time you need us.

What Happens When You Call Austin for Water Heater Repair?

    Step 1 ➡

    Get the Call Moving

Call or book online when the problem shows up.

You can reach Austin 24/7 to get the process started.

Same-day water-heater appointments are available, and most of the time we’re at the home within about two hours of the call.

    Step 2 ➡

    We Arrive Prepared

Our technicians arrive with the diagnostic tools needed to properly troubleshoot water heaters and the common repair parts we use every day already onboard the fleet.

That gives us a better chance of solving the problem and completing the work in one visit.

    Step 3 ➡

We Work Through the Water Heater Deep Dive

We do not start by deciding what part we want to change.

The technician records the important equipment and symptom information and follows Austin’s Water Heater Deep Dive & Servicing process based on the type of heater and what it is doing.

That may involve servicing maintenance-related items, inspecting connected systems and taking actual diagnostic measurements.

The purpose is to get past the symptom and determine the root of the problem.

    Step 4 ➡

We Show You What the Heater Actually Needs

Once we understand the problem, we explain what correcting it looks like.

    That may be servicing.

    It may be a repair.

    And sometimes replacement deserves consideration.

You do not have to choose the category of work before we arrive.

You see the reasonable choices and the price before authorized work begins.

    Step 5 ➡

    We Complete the Work

Because we carry common water-heater repair parts onboard our fleet, most repairs can be completed on the same trip.

If a less-common or manufacturer-specific part needs to be ordered, we explain what is needed and what happens next.

    Step 6 ➡

We Test It Before We Leave

Repair is not finished because a part was installed.

    Austin’s process includes a post-service test-out.

We put the system back into normal operation, verify the water heater is working as intended, confirm the appropriate settings and make sure the work area is clean and dry.

Then we explain what was done and document the condition and recommended next step.

Sometimes the Diagnosis Leads Somewhere Else

    Water Heater Replacement

If the tank itself has failed, the repair is becoming hard to justify or the existing heater no longer fits the home, replacement may make more sense.

    Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless systems require a different diagnostic, repair and maintenance approach.

Tankless repair, replacement, conversion and maintenance live in depth on the Tankless Water Heaters page.

    Emergency Water Heater Service

If the water heater is actively leaking and threatening the home or the situation requires urgent help, use the emergency service path.

    Water Heater Repair Questions

Do I need to know whether my water heater needs repair, maintenance or replacement before I call?

    No.

You only need to tell us what the water heater is doing.

Austin diagnoses the problem before deciding what kind of work makes sense.

If a component has failed, we can repair it.

If a service or maintenance condition is causing the problem, we can address that.

If the tank has failed or the condition of the heater makes replacement the more sensible direction, we explain why.

You do not have to choose the answer before the diagnosis.

Does Austin use a water heater diagnostic checklist?

    Yes.

Austin technicians use a dedicated Water Heater Deep Dive & Servicing process when diagnosing water-heater problems.

It records important information about the equipment, age, maintenance history, symptoms, fault codes and condition of the heater and guides the technician through the appropriate diagnostic path.

Depending on the type of water heater and the symptoms, that can include checking or measuring venting, gas supply, electrical components, ignition systems, water pressure, temperature, controls, safety devices, water quality and other operating conditions.

The process also includes servicing applicable maintenance items and a post-service test-out before the visit is closed.

The purpose is to diagnose the cause of the problem instead of changing parts based on symptoms alone.

What should I look for in a water heater repair company?

Look for more than someone who says they work on water heaters.

A good water-heater repair company should be able to explain how it diagnoses the equipment, have technicians equipped to properly test the system, carry the parts commonly needed for repair, explain when maintenance may be contributing to the problem and give you the price before authorized work begins.

It also helps when the company can address connected plumbing, gas, electrical, venting, water-pressure and water-quality problems instead of stopping the diagnosis at the edge of the tank.

Austin has built its water-heater service around those things: a documented diagnostic process, trained technicians, proper troubleshooting instruments, commonly used repair parts carried across the fleet, upfront pricing and plumbing, electrical, HVAC, well and water-treatment capability inside the same company.

Can maintenance actually fix a water heater problem?

    Yes, sometimes.

Not every water-heater problem is caused by a failed part.

Sediment, scale, dirty operating components and other maintenance-related conditions can affect ignition, noise, recovery and hot-water performance.

When one of those conditions is causing the problem, servicing the heater may be corrective work rather than simply preventative maintenance.

Maintenance cannot repair a failed tank or every failed component.

That is why Austin diagnoses and services the heater before deciding what additional repair is actually needed.

Does Austin diagnose a water heater before recommending replacement?

    Yes.

A water heater that stops working does not automatically need to be replaced.

Austin starts by determining what failed and evaluating the condition of the heater.

If repairing or servicing the existing water heater makes sense, we show you that path.

If the tank has failed or the condition, repair history and cost make replacement worth considering, we explain why.

Our plumbers are paid to solve the problem, not based on how large the repair or replacement becomes.

Does a leaking water heater always need to be replaced?

    No.

Where the water is coming from matters.

If the tank itself has failed and is leaking, replacement usually becomes the practical answer.

But pressure-relief valves, fittings, piping and other components can leak too, and those problems may be repairable.

We find the source before recommending a new water heater.

My water heater stopped working. Does that mean I need a new one?

    Not necessarily.

Gas water heaters can stop working because of pilot, ignition, sensor, venting or control problems.

Electric water heaters can have failed elements, thermostats, connections or controls.

Maintenance-related conditions can create problems too.

Many of those issues can be corrected without replacing the entire water heater.

The diagnosis tells us which situation you actually have.

How much does water heater repair cost?

    Looking at Austin’s completed tank-style water-heater repairs from 2025 through August 2026:

About 1 in 3 finished at $150 or less.

More than half finished under $400.

About 3 in 4 finished at $500 or less.

More than 9 in 10 finished at $750 or less.

Those figures describe completed repairs, not replacements, maintenance-only visits or diagnosis-only visits.

Your actual price follows diagnosis because the same symptom can lead to very different repairs.

What does Austin’s $99 water heater dispatch fee include?

The $99 dispatch includes the initial diagnostic work needed to get to the bottom of most water-heater problems.

If more involved diagnostic work is needed, we explain what is required and quote it before continuing.

The dispatch fee is waived when you move forward with the work and is also waived for Club Austin members.

How do I know whether repairing my water heater still makes sense?

You do not need to determine that before calling.

We consider what actually failed, whether the tank itself is sound, what the repair involves, whether the heater has had repeated problems, how well it is meeting the home’s hot-water demand and what you are likely to gain by repairing it.

When more than one path is reasonable, we explain the trade-offs and tell you what we would do if it were our own home.

Can Austin repair my water heater on the same trip?

    Most of the time, yes.

Austin carries the common gas and electric water-heater repair parts we use every day onboard our service fleet so that, once the problem has been diagnosed, most repairs can be completed during the same trip.

If the repair requires a less-common or manufacturer-specific part, we explain what is needed and what happens next.

Same-day water-heater appointments are also available.

Do you repair gas and electric water heaters?

    Yes.

We diagnose, service and repair conventional gas, power-vent gas and electric tank water heaters.

Austin also works on tankless systems, although tankless diagnosis and maintenance have their own process and are covered in depth on our Tankless Water Heaters page.

Why does my water heater pilot light keep going out?

A pilot outage can be caused by several conditions, including ignition components, flame sensing, gas controls, venting or other operating problems.

If it happens once, relighting may restore the heater.

If it keeps happening, the more important question is why.

Austin diagnoses the cause rather than treating repeated relighting as the repair.

Why is my water heater making a popping or rumbling noise?

Sediment or scale can contribute to rumbling and popping, although unusual sounds can have other causes too.

The noise alone does not tell us whether the heater needs maintenance, repair or replacement.

We look at the condition of the heater and determine what is actually creating the sound before recommending the work.
