Water Heater Replacement & Installation in Southeastern Wisconsin

Need a New Water Heater? We Can Handle It Today.

Austin stocks the gas, electric and power-vent water heaters Southeastern Wisconsin homes use every day. Replacements ride on many of our trucks, more equipment is close behind through our warehouses and support team, and same-day installation is available.

  • Most of the time, we’re at the home within about two hours.

  • Common replacement water heaters are already stocked and moving with our fleet.

  • Signature Series installations are 100% covered by Austin for six years.

  • Complete installed pricing up front. Financing is available on every water-heater replacement.

Water Heater Replacement Starts a Few Different Ways

Sometimes there is no question. The tank is leaking and the water heater is done.

Other times the heater still works, but you’re tired of running out of hot water, paying for repairs or wondering whether today is the day it finally lets go.

We handle all of those situations.

My Water Heater Tank Is Leaking

Water from a valve, fitting or pipe can sometimes be repaired.

Water coming through a failed tank is different.

Once the tank itself starts leaking, there is no reliable tank repair. The water heater needs to be replaced.

That is one reason we keep common replacement water heaters in stock and on many of our service trucks. A failed tank does not automatically have to mean days without hot water.

My Water Heater Quit and Repair Doesn’t Make Sense

Sometimes the diagnosis is clear: the heater can technically be repaired, but putting more money into it does not make much sense.

We look at what failed, the condition of the tank, its repair history and what the repair would actually buy you.

If repair still makes sense, our Water Heater Repair team can handle it.

If the heater has reached the point where replacement is the better use of the money, you’re already in the right place.

We Keep Running Out of Hot Water

Replacing a water heater is a chance to fix a capacity problem instead of simply recreating it.

Maybe the household has grown. Maybe there is a large tub that never quite fills with hot water. Maybe several showers happen back-to-back.

We can look at how your home actually uses hot water and help determine whether another 40- or 50-gallon heater makes sense, whether more storage is warranted, or whether another solution would serve the home better.

I Want to Replace It Before It Fails

You don’t have to wait for water on the basement floor.

If an older water heater is showing its age and a failure would create a real headache, planned replacement gives you more control over the timing and the choices.

We can evaluate what you have, tell you whether we would replace it yet, and give you options if you decide now is the right time.

I Want Something Different Than What I Have Now

Replacement does not have to mean installing the exact same water heater again.

Capacity, fuel source, venting, available space and how much hot water the home needs all matter.

Sometimes like-for-like is absolutely the right answer.

Sometimes a different capacity, power-vent setup, mixing strategy or tankless system solves a problem the old heater never handled particularly well.

We’ll show you the choices that actually fit the home.

No Hot Water? Let’s Get It Moving.

Same-day water heater replacements are available.

We keep common replacement equipment close, have water heaters on many trucks in the fleet, and have a support team that can deliver equipment when the right unit isn’t already there.

3,000+ 5-Star Google Reviews

“Found out my water heater went during my morning shower. Was able to book online for same day service. Luke was 15 minutes early to the scheduled time slot, which was greatly appreciated. He walked me through 3 different options that he had already on the truck. He communicated throughout the project. We had hot water again in less than 3 hours start to finish.”

What Does Water Heater Replacement Really Cost?

An installed water-heater price is only useful if you know what is included.

We could publish the price of a simple push-pull replacement and make the number look lower.

We do simple replacements too.

But that would not tell you what Austin customers actually pay when the job also needs a permit, removal of the old heater, new valves, expansion protection, venting work, gas piping, a drain pan, a mixing valve or another part of the installation done correctly.

So we looked at the complete invoices instead.

What Austin Water Heater Replacements Have Actually Cost

We reviewed 129 qualifying completed tank-style water-heater replacements from 2025 through August 2026.

We removed client-supplied heaters, warranty replacements, tankless conversions, multiple-water-heater projects and jobs bundled with unrelated plumbing work.

Here is where those completed replacement jobs landed:

  • About 1 in 4 finished at $2,850 or less.
  • Half finished at about $3,100 or less.
  • About 3 in 4 finished at $4,000 or less.
  • About 9 in 10 finished at about $5,100 or less.

Those are complete Austin invoices, not the retail price of the water heater sitting in a box.

The Type of Water Heater Matters

A standard 40- or 50-gallon gas water heater is not the same installation as a power-vent heater.

A 50-gallon electric heater is not the same job as a 75-gallon power-vent unit.

Our recent history reflects that.

Common standard 40- and 50-gallon gas and electric replacements frequently land in the high-$2,000s to low-$3,000s when the installation is relatively straightforward.

A 50-gallon power-vent replacement commonly moves into the low-$4,000s.

Larger 75-gallon equipment, power-vent systems and installations that require more supporting work can move higher.

That is exactly why one giant “water heater replacement price” can be misleading.

What Can Change the Installed Price?

The water heater itself is only part of the project.

Price can move with:

  • Water-heater size and type
  • Gas, electric or power-vent equipment
  • Existing venting condition
  • Gas-piping changes
  • Electrical changes
  • Water pressure and expansion protection
  • Shutoff valves and connections
  • Drain pans and drain routing
  • Mixing valves or added hot-water capacity
  • Difficult access
  • Other code or compatibility issues discovered at the existing installation

Not every home needs every one of those things.

We look at the installation that is actually there and price the scope it actually needs.

Compare Water Heater Quotes Apples to Apples

Two quotes for a “50-gallon water heater” can be two very different jobs.

Before comparing the bottom line, find out whether both proposals include the same things:

  • The same class and quality of water heater
  • Removal and disposal of the old heater
  • Permit and inspection
  • Required gas, electrical and venting work
  • Shutoff valves and service connections
  • Thermal-expansion protection
  • Drain pan or water protection where part of the scope
  • Code corrections included in the proposal
  • Home and floor protection
  • Warranty on more than just the tank
  • Cleanup, testing and final setup

A lower number is a better value when the scope is actually the same.

When half the job is missing from one proposal, it is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

A Lower Price Is Only Better When You’re Comparing the Same Job

We are not going to tell you Austin will always be the lowest price.

We will tell you exactly what we are installing, what is included, what is covered for six years and what the complete job costs before you decide.

Then you can compare it fairly.

Why We Quote Water Heater Replacement in Person

There is too much at stake to pretend we know the complete installation from a phone call.

The same 50-gallon water heater can be two very different installations depending on the venting, gas piping, electrical connection, shutoffs, water pressure, access and condition of the existing system.

The $99 visit lets one of our plumbers see the installation, determine the complete scope and give you the bottom-line installed price before you make a decision.

If Austin replaces the water heater, the $99 is waived.

And in practice, more often than not, once homeowners see what Austin is providing for the price — the equipment, complete installation, permit, workmanship and warranty — they move forward with us.

That means relatively few homeowners who call us for a water heater that truly needs replacement end up paying the $99 as a standalone fee.

We would rather put a real plumber in front of the real installation and give you one complete number than give you a cheap number over the phone that changes once somebody gets to your house.

5-star google quote

Andrew and his team were fantastic. Showed up onsite with a custom (short) water heater and had it installed in 2 hours! Price was a little higher than others but the response time and quality of work was definitely worth it.

The Water Heater Is Only Part of a Good Installation

You can install a good water heater poorly.

You can also install a good water heater in a way that makes it easier to service, reduces unnecessary stress on the tank and gives it a better chance of living a long life.

That is the thinking behind Austin’s Signature Series water-heater installation.

We Build the Installation Around the Water Heater

Our Signature Series process looks beyond whether the new tank can simply be connected to the old pipes.

Depending on the installation, that can include things such as:

  • Proper thermal-expansion protection
  • Serviceable hot and cold shutoffs
  • Gas shutoff and piping where needed
  • Connections designed to reduce corrosion between dissimilar metals
  • Better drain and service access
  • Proper venting
  • Water-pressure concerns
  • Drain-pan and water-protection options
  • Corrections needed to make the new equipment work properly with the home

The point is not to add things for the sake of adding things.

It is to install the water heater in a way we are comfortable standing behind.

Water Heater Installation Is Trained at Austin U

We do not leave water-heater installation standards to whoever happens to be holding the wrench that day.

Our plumbers go through rigorous water-heater installation training at Austin U around the way Austin expects these systems to be installed.

That includes the details that affect safety, serviceability, workmanship and the long-term life of the equipment.

The goal is consistency.

A water heater installed by Austin should look and perform like an Austin installation regardless of which qualified Austin plumber completed the work.

Every Installation Is Permitted

Austin pulls the required water-heater permit.

The local inspection gives another set of eyes on the completed installation and confirms the work meets the requirements of the municipality.

Code is the floor.

Where Austin’s written installation standards call for more, we follow the Austin standard.

We Protect the Home While We Work

We protect the floors and work area before the old water heater starts moving through the house.

The old heater is removed and hauled away.

When the installation is finished, we clean up the work area.

Craftsmanship includes what your home looks like when we leave.

The Job Ends With Commissioning, Not Just Installation

Connecting the new water heater is not the last step.

Austin follows a documented commissioning process before we call the job complete.

The plumber verifies the new equipment and the system around it are operating the way they should, checks the completed installation, tests the work and records the required startup information.

That final process matters because a water heater should not simply work when we leave.

We want to give it the best possible start toward a long service life.

Six Years. Everything We Installed.

This is one of the biggest reasons to compare the whole installation, not just the manufacturer label on the tank.

Austin Signature Series water-heater installations are 100% covered for six years.

That means the water heater and the things Austin installed with it.

The tank.

Valves.

Expansion tank.

Fittings.

Connections.

Everything Austin installed as part of that Signature Series job is covered for six years.

We can stand behind the whole installation because the warranty is tied to how we install the system, not simply to the box the equipment came in.

What If I Just Want the Most Budget-Friendly Replacement?

Tell us.

We can remove selected Signature Series upgrades and build a simpler installation when keeping the upfront investment down is the priority.

We are not going to pretend the stripped-down package and the Signature Series package are the same thing.

And budget does not mean cutting out the things that should never be optional.

We still pull the permit.

We still meet code.

We still protect your home.

We still install the water heater safely and professionally.

We’ll show you what changes, what you save and what you give up.

Then you can decide which value makes the most sense for you.

What Should Replace Your Current Water Heater?

You may already know exactly what you want.

If you don’t, that’s normal.

Our job is to help you choose a water heater that fits the home instead of simply repeating whatever happens to be sitting there now.

Another Standard Gas Water Heater

For a lot of Southeastern Wisconsin homes, another standard gas water heater is still the simplest and most sensible answer.

If the current size keeps up with the family, the venting works and the existing setup makes sense, there may be no reason to make the project more complicated.

An Electric Water Heater

If the home already has an electric water heater, a like-for-like electric replacement can be straightforward.

We stock and install common electric tank sizes and can evaluate the electrical connection as part of the replacement.

A Power-Vent Water Heater

Power-vent water heaters use a blower to move exhaust out of the home.

They cost more than a standard atmospheric-vent water heater because the equipment and installation are different.

If you already have a power-vent system, need to change how the heater vents, or the home cannot use a conventional chimney setup, we can walk you through the options.

More Hot Water

The answer is not always “buy the biggest tank that fits.”

We look at how much hot water the household actually uses, when that demand happens, the available space and how the existing heater has performed.

A different tank size, a mixing strategy or another equipment choice may give the home more usable hot water without blindly oversizing the system.

The right size is the one that handles your household’s peak hot-water demand without spending unnecessarily on equipment the home does not need.

Tankless

Tankless can be a good fit when the homeowner wants continuous hot water, more usable space or a different long-term ownership experience.

It is also a different installation.

Gas capacity, venting, condensate, electrical needs and the home’s actual hot-water demand all matter.

We install tankless systems, but the deeper comparison belongs on our dedicated page.

What Would We Put in Our Own Home?

We will tell you.

When more than one option is reasonable, we’ll explain the trade-offs and tell you what we would choose if we were making the decision in our own house.

Sometimes that is the more expensive option.

Sometimes it isn’t.

Water Heater Replacement Is
Something Austin Does at Scale

We buy our water heaters through the largest plumbing distributor in the country.

According to their sales records, no contractor purchases more water heaters for replacement installation in Southeastern Wisconsin than Austin.

There is another way to check that.

Water-heater replacements require permits, and those records live with the municipalities where the work is performed.

If you want to know who is actually replacing the most water heaters in your community, call your local building department and ask who pulls the most replacement-water-heater permits.

Austin will be at the top of the list in the communities we serve.

That volume matters because replacing a lot of water heaters has allowed us to build a better operation around the work.

We know what equipment Southeastern Wisconsin homes use.

We stock it.

We carry replacement heaters on many trucks.

We have warehouses and a support team behind the field.

And we have a written installation process built from doing this work over and over again.

The homeowner benefit is simple: more equipment available, more experience with the installations we actually find here, and a better chance of getting the job handled correctly and quickly.

More Water Heaters Close to the Customer

High installation volume only helps if the operation behind it is built to support the homeowner.

Ours is.

We stock the water heaters we install most often.

Replacement units ride on many trucks in the fleet.

Our warehouses carry additional equipment.

And our support team can move the right water heater to the job when it isn’t already on the plumber’s truck.

That is how a water heater that fails in the morning can become hot water again the same day.

Repetition Builds a Better Process

When a company installs a lot of water heaters, the unusual parts of the job stop being quite so unusual.

Tight spaces.

Short tanks.

Old venting.

High water pressure.

Strange gas piping.

Failed shutoffs.

Finished basements.

Heavy equipment.

Difficult carry-outs.

That volume gives us the opportunity to keep improving our stocking, training, written standards and installation process around the homes we actually work in.

The Training Is Built Around the Work

Austin U is not only for apprentices learning the basics.

We use it to train and reinforce the way Austin expects water heaters to be installed.

That means the field team is not relying solely on personal habits or the way somebody happened to learn the trade years ago.

The standards are taught, practiced and reinforced.

Tradespeople Make the Recommendation

We put plumbers in front of homeowners, not a dedicated water-heater salesperson.

They understand how the equipment is repaired, installed and serviced later.

Their job is to look at the home, explain the sensible options and help you choose one.

We Install With Future Service in Mind

A water heater should not only work on installation day.

Valves should be accessible.

Connections should make sense.

The tank should be serviceable.

The next plumber should not have to destroy the installation just to maintain it.

Those details are easy to overlook when the only goal is getting the new tank connected as quickly as possible.

A Real Company Stands Behind the Warranty

A six-year warranty means more when the company making the promise intends to be around to honor it.

Austin has served Southeastern Wisconsin since 1939.

We remain privately owned and are building the company for perpetuity.

If we install your water heater today, our intention is to still be the company answering the phone when you need us years from now.

What Homeowners Say After Austin Replaces Their Water Heater

Jean Pearce
Google Review

“We noticed our water heater was leaking and called Austin. The receptionist talked to a tech and called me back in less than 10 min and had a tech out to our house in under an hour. He replaced our water heater even staying late to get it done that evening. Super knowledgeable and helpful. Very professional company!”

Walt Boyer

“Don was timely, even showed up earlier than scheduled which was a plus. Diagnosed and stated our options clearly and concisely. Gave his recommendation about what replacement option would be best, and the most cost effective, for us. Then explained in plain language the features and functionality of our new water heater.

Got the old water heater drained, disconnected and out of the house, then installed the new unit including running the plumbing, connecting the exhaust fan, installed new vent piping up to code. Great work. Timely, efficient and friendly.”

Paula Corbin

“Our water heater died and they replaced it for us. They scheduled for the next morning and came right on time. They pulled all the permits so we KNOW it was done correctly and to code.

When the inspection was done, everything was installed perfectly. I know that Team Austin is a company that I trust to do the job right the first time and not cut corners.”

Haylie Hampton

“I have worked with Don (toilet leak), Seth (furnace tune up) as well as Dylan (water heater leak/replacement) and they have all been very professional – Austin is very reliable and prompt with my service needs.”

What Happens When Austin Replaces Your Water Heater?

    Step 1 ➡

    Get Us to the House

    Call or book online.

Same-day appointments are available, and most of the time we’re at the home within about two hours.

You can start the process 24/7 by phone or online.

    Step 2 ➡

We Look at the Actual Installation

Before throwing out a number, we look at what is there.

    Tank size.
    Fuel source.
    Venting.
    Gas or electrical connection.
    Water piping.
    Shutoffs.
    Pressure.
    Drainage.
    Access.
The way the household uses hot water.

That lets us build the real scope instead of guessing from the phone.

    Step 3 ➡

You See the Choices and the Complete Price

If there is one obvious replacement path, we’ll show it to you.

If there are meaningful choices, we’ll explain them.

You’ll know the water heater, the installation scope, the warranty and the bottom-line price before you authorize the work.

Financing is available on every water-heater replacement, subject to lender

    Step 4 ➡

We Get the Water Heater There

The right replacement may already be on the truck.

If it isn’t, Austin’s warehouse and support operation can get equipment moving while the plumber prepares the job.

That behind-the-scenes support is a big part of how same-day replacement happens.

    Step 5 ➡

We Protect the Home and Install It Right

We protect the work path and installation area.

The old water heater is drained, disconnected, removed and hauled away.

We pull the permit and install the new water heater to the approved scope, current code and Austin’s written installation standards.

    Step 6 ➡

We Commission the New Water Heater

Installation is followed by Austin’s documented commissioning process.

We verify the new water heater and the parts of the system Austin worked on are operating correctly, complete the required startup checks and test the finished installation before closeout.

    Step 7 ➡

We Clean Up and Walk You Through It

We clean the work area and explain the new equipment.

You’ll know anything important about operating or maintaining it, what happens with the permit and inspection, and what Austin’s warranty covers.

Then you get your hot water back.

Financing Is Available on Every Water Heater Replacement

Water heaters rarely fail according to the household budget.

Financing is available on every Austin water-heater replacement if you would rather spread the investment over time instead of paying for the entire project at once.

Let us know before you authorize the work and we can help get the financing process started.

Financing is provided through third-party financing partners.

Approval, rates and terms are determined by the lender.

Questions About Replacing Your Water Heater

Can Austin replace my water heater the same day?

    Often, yes.

Same-day water-heater replacement is available, and we have built our inventory and support operation around making that possible.

Common replacement water heaters are stocked locally, units ride on many of our service trucks, and our support team can deliver equipment when the right heater is not already there.

A homeowner who calls with a failed common tank water heater has a very real chance of having hot water again that same day.

Why won’t Austin just give me a water heater replacement price over the phone?

Because we want the number we give you to be the real number.

And more often than not, once homeowners see what Austin is providing for the price — the equipment, complete installation, permit, workmanship and six-year coverage — they move forward with us.

Relatively few homeowners who call us for a water heater that truly needs replacement end up paying the $99 as a standalone fee.

We would rather put a real plumber in front of the real installation and give you one complete number than give you a cheap number over the phone that changes once somebody gets to your house.

What should I compare when choosing a company to replace my water heater?

Compare more than the water heater itself.

Ask what the installed price includes, whether a permit is being pulled, what happens if the existing venting or piping needs work, how quickly the company can actually get the correct heater to your home, who is making the recommendation and what the warranty covers after the installation is finished.

Also ask whether water-heater replacement is something the company does occasionally or something its operation is actually built around.

Austin purchases its water heaters through the largest plumbing distributor in the country. According to their sales records, no contractor purchases more replacement water heaters for installation in Southeastern Wisconsin than Austin.

Municipal permit records provide another independent way to see that installation volume locally.

Austin can evaluate the existing system, supply the equipment, pull the permit, remove the old heater, complete the installation, commission the new system and stand behind everything we install.

Our Signature Series installation is 100% covered by Austin for six years — the tank, valves, expansion tank, fittings, connections and everything else we installed as part of the job.

That gives you a lot more to compare than the price printed next to the water heater.

What size water heater do I need?

It depends on how the home uses hot water, not simply how many people live there.

We look at the existing tank size, whether you currently run out of hot water, peak usage, bathrooms, large tubs or showers, available space and the type of equipment.

If the existing size has always worked well, replacing like-for-like may be the simplest answer.

If it has never kept up, replacement is a good time to fix the capacity problem.

Does Austin pull a permit for water heater replacement?

    Yes.

Austin pulls the required permit on every water-heater replacement we perform.

The completed installation can then be inspected by the municipality.

That is part of our normal process, not something we leave for the homeowner to figure out afterward.

What does Austin’s six-year water heater warranty cover?

On an Austin Signature Series water-heater installation, everything we install is covered for six years.

That includes the water heater and the other components Austin installed as part of the job.

    The tank.

    Valves.

    Expansion tank.

    Fittings.

    Connections.

The warranty is on the installed system we put together, not only the tank sitting in the middle of it.

How does Austin make sure the new water heater is installed correctly?

We use written installation standards, train water-heater installation at Austin U and follow a documented commissioning process after installation.

That means quality is not left entirely to personal preference.

The plumber follows Austin’s expectations for the installation and then verifies the finished system is operating correctly before the job is closed out.

That process is designed around safety, serviceability, consistent workmanship and giving the new water heater its best opportunity for a long service life.

Why can one water heater installation quote be so much cheaper than another?

Sometimes it really is a lower price for the same job.

Sometimes it isn’t the same job.

One proposal may be a simple tank swap.

Another may include permit, removal, valves, expansion protection, venting changes, gas or electrical work, drainage, code corrections and a much broader installation warranty.

Compare the equipment and the scope before comparing the bottom line.

Austin can price a simpler replacement when that is what the home needs or when budget is the priority.

We just want you to know what is included and what is not.

Can I choose a more basic installation to save money?

    Yes.

Our Signature Series is the installation we recommend because of the added installation standards and six-year coverage behind everything we install.

If budget is the priority, tell us.

We can remove selected upgrades and show you a simpler package.

We will explain what changes so you can decide whether the savings are worth the trade-off.

Permit, code compliance and protecting your home are not budget options.

Those remain part of the job.

Do you remove my old water heater?

    Yes.

Removal, haul-away and disposal of the old water heater are part of the replacement process when Austin is supplying and installing the new equipment.

You do not need to figure out what to do with the old tank after we leave.

How long does it take to replace a water heater?

Many straightforward tank replacements are completed in a matter of hours.

The exact time depends on the type and size of the heater, access and whether the existing venting, gas, electrical or plumbing connections need additional work.

We have customers who have gone from calling us in the morning to having a new water heater running that afternoon.

The goal is to move quickly without turning fast into rushed.

Should I replace my tank water heater with a tankless system?

    Maybe.

Tankless can be a great fit for some homes, but it is not automatically the better choice for every home.

The existing gas supply, venting, electrical needs, household hot-water demand, installation cost and long-term ownership goals all matter.

We install both, so we can compare the choices without needing every replacement conversation to end with the same product.

    Tankless Water Heaters

Do you offer financing for water heater replacement?

    Yes.

Financing is available on every Austin water-heater replacement.

If spreading the investment over time would make the project easier to handle, let us know before you authorize the work so we can help get the financing process started.

Approval, rates and terms are determined by the third-party lender.
