Peter B. called about a slow-draining bathroom vanity sink, and once we snaked the line we found the cast iron drain piping and galvanized water lines in his mechanical room were cobbled together in a tight, hard-to-access space. An abandoned furnace was blocking the drain work, so we removed it, cut out the old galvanized water lines and cast iron sewer piping, and rebuilt the mechanical room with new PVC drain lines and new PEX and copper water lines. We also replaced the questionable main shut-off valve that had a vice grip locked onto it in place of a handle.

We shut the water down at the valve ahead of the meter, removed the failing shutoff located after the meter, and installed a new main water shutoff valve in its place. We tightened the packing nut on the older valve ahead of the meter and let the homeowners know it showed signs of a previous leak and was difficult to operate, so it should be monitored. Once the new valve was in, we checked all connections for leaks and tested the system for proper operation.
